Neil Joseph Stephen Fraser, known professionally as Mad Professor, is a British dub music producer, engineer, and remixer born in Georgetown, Guyana in 1955. He moved to London at age 13 and established his legendary Ariwa studio and label in 1979, which became a hub for reggae and dub production. A disciple of Lee Scratch Perry's approach, Mad Professor defined dub reggae's second generation with his Dub Me Crazy series, which brought the genre into the digital age while maintaining its spacious, effects-heavy sound. Beyond reggae, he became a sought-after remixer for diverse artists including Massive Attack, Sade, and the Orb, demonstrating dub's broader cultural reach. His career has spanned more than four decades, combining digital innovation with rootsy, organic textures that balance his early studio experiments with classic dub aesthetics.
