Born in Pößneck, East Germany in 1977, Marcel Dettmann moved to Berlin in 1999 and became a resident at Ostgut, the predecessor to Berghain, where he has remained a core artist since the club's opening in 2004. He worked at Hard Wax record store from 2002 to 2012, deepening his knowledge of electronic music while building a distinctive minimalist techno aesthetic. Dettmann began producing in 2006, releasing music primarily on Ostgut Ton and his own label MDR, crafting hypnotic, stripped-down techno rooted in his formative exposure to industrial, post-punk and EBM during his East German childhood. Beyond the club, he has curated compilations for fabric, Berghain, and Dekmantel, and collaborated with visual artists on interdisciplinary projects. His sound and curatorial approach have defined Berlin's underground techno for more than two decades.
