Moritz von Oswald was born in Hamburg in 1962 and is based in Berlin, where he helped define the city's international standing in electronic music. He began his career in the early 1980s as a percussionist with the avant-garde new wave band Palais Schaumburg before transitioning to electronic production in the late 1980s. Von Oswald co-founded Basic Channel with Mark Ernestus in the early 1990s, releasing minimal dub techno under various aliases that emphasized stripped-down aesthetics, deep basslines, and echo effects inspired by Jamaican dub reggae. Beyond Basic Channel, he has collaborated across genres and continents—working with Detroit producer Juan Atkins as Borderland, conducting the Moritz von Oswald Trio with musicians including Vladislav Delay and Tony Allen, and reinterpreting classical works with Carl Craig. His work spans solo releases, film scores, and experimental projects that blend electronic music with orchestral and choral elements.
