Danilo Plessow, based in Stuttgart, Germany, is a DJ and producer best known as Motor City Drum Ensemble. The moniker pays tribute to Detroit's soul and techno heritage while referencing his hometown, and his collection of classic drum machines forms the sonic core of his work. Before founding MCDE in 2007, Plessow gained recognition for his broken-beat project Inverse Cinematics alongside Joachim Tobias, earning support from Gilles Peterson and Rainer Trüby. His breakthrough came with the Raw Cuts series on his MCDE label between 2008 and 2009, which established his deep house sound through sample-heavy productions informed by Moodymann, Theo Parrish, and Detroit practitioners. Plessow has since released across more than 25 labels including Studio !K7, 20:20 Vision, and Rush Hour, while continuing to run MCDE Recordings alongside Pablo Valentino and exploring production through aliases like Vermont and Basic-Variation.
