N.O.I.A. were an Italian synth-pop and electronic group formed in 1978 as a five-piece quintet, featuring Bruno Magnani and Davide Piatto as founding members. Among the first Italian electronic groups, they drew early inspiration from Kraftwerk but developed a distinctive style of repetitive, absurd music and lyrics that predated much of the British electronic musical experience of the early 1980s. The band won Italy's inaugural rock festival in 1980, though their confrontational live aesthetic often provoked intense audience reactions. In 1983, they transitioned to a studio-only project under three members on Italian Records, maintaining their obsessive and repetitive approach while becoming more accessible in sound. The group disbanded in 1988, leaving behind a legacy as pioneers of Italian electronic music.
