Temple Rat is the project of Yuxin Mei, a Chinese composer and multi-instrumentalist based in Berlin since the mid-2010s. She fuses the Erhu—a traditional Chinese bowed instrument—with electronic production, layering in woodwinds, percussion, and field recordings to create cinematic soundscapes rooted in both Eastern heritage and contemporary electronic music. Her work emphasizes spatial depth and emotional storytelling, balancing acoustic delicacy with industrial grit. Mei has performed at Berghain and other Berlin venues, and released music on labels including Siamese Twins Records and Buttheads. Her practice extends beyond the club into installations and cross-cultural curation through her collectives.
